Introduction

I am obsessed with chess sets.

I have always been fascinated with the ancient game of chess and with chess sets. Too late in the day by graduate school, I decided I wasn’t destined to be a superb chess player. Yet, my passion for chess sets remained. Like beautiful books they were drooled at, saved-up for, purchased, treasured, displayed, used, borrowed, sold, and, but only rarely, given away as gifts. Looking back now, I believe I learned to play the game as a mere excuse to own, if not collect, chess sets. I may have seen them all: hand-carved wood, chiseled marble, cast brass and bronze, pewter, cold-pressed glass, reconstituted amber, baked terracotta, and molded plastic, resin, and fiberglass.

The most stunning set I ever saw was a square coffee table lined with 64 ceramic tiles on which fired-clay vessels functioned as the pieces, a sculptor’s gift to the late female chess master and art impresario Odette Alcantara. Favorites I actually owned at different times in my life include a 100% hand-carved board and pieces made of a species of purple, Philippine wood; an all-white mirror chessboard with frosted- and clear-crystal pieces; a Scooby-Doo; an Africa; and an ancient China. The last three of these are still in my possession.

Playing and watching chess games can be boring to me; handling fine chess pieces on a board, most satisfying. Still in graduate school and deeply engaged in playwriting and dramatherapy, I discovered that I could use chessboards as gridded, model stage floors for locating sets and determining set changes. I also discovered that I could use the chess pieces to stand for different characters, or players, as aids to blocking, lighting, and marking exits and entrances. The various configurations I experimented with aroused in my mind special insights on dramatic attitude, motivation, body language, proximity and distance, action. My interest piqued when figural chess pieces arrived on the market; the pieces literally took on distinct personalities and came to life. As Shakespeare wrote in As You Like It, “All the world’s a stage,/ And all the men and women merely players;/ They have their exits and their entrances…”

While the entire passage from the play enumerates seven characters/players: infant, schoolboy, lover, soldier, justice, pantaloon, and one in second-childhood, there are, of course, more, especially magician, or mage. For that is how I further discovered that the boundaries of a chessboard may be used to delimit and define both physical space—a room, a house, a building, a neighborhood, a city, a country—and non-physical space—the mind, the heart, the astral body, an idea, an emotion, a metaphysical location. By manipulating the chess pieces in combination with other objects, I was able to use the chessboard as a magical altar, or as a space on which to perform magical spells.

Thus did this book come into being. After more than 40 years of practice I organized my notes and put them together for the benefit of my students and of anyone out there in cyberspace.

Setting Up A Magical Chessboard

This is the correct orientation of the magical chessboard—definitely unlike how it is used in an ordinary chess game. As a general rule the four squares (two Light, two Dark) in the center (+) of the board represent the starting point, a beginning, the fusion of yin and yang, or the Self. Note that the true center is a + formation.

The four corners of the magical chessboard represent, in clockwise order from the top: north, east, south, and west.

Here is how the magical chess pieces are arranged on the magical chessboard, and again, unlike how they are used in an ordinary chess game.

By tradition, “opposing” chess pieces are referred to as Red and White, which in modern times evolved into Black and White, but which, in magical practice and in this book, I refer to as Dark and Light. As a general rule Dark pieces are yin, or feminine; Light pieces, yang, or masculine.

Therefore, on the magical chessboard:

North is Dark, or female

East is Light, or male

South is Light, or male, and

West is Dark, or female

When the pieces on the magical chessboard are not proactive, they remain in these positions, where they are said to be Witnesses to whatever magical action takes place on the center (+) of the magical chessboard. When pieces are proactive and taken from their usual positions to be used on the magical chessboard, they are said to be Players.

Any object that does not typically belong to a chess set and introduced onto the magical chessboard is said to be a Property, or a Prop.

There are 32 pieces in every chess set; the first 16 are Dark, the other 16, Light.

Of each grouping of 16, there are: 8 Pawns, 2 Knights, 2 Bishops, 2 Rooks, 1 Queen, and 1 King.

The following assignations are given the pieces:

Dark King, a male antagonist

Dark Queen, a female antagonist

Bishop, female mage or The Shadow

Dark Knight, a vehicle or catalyst, a stranger, an outsider, the mage’s elemental guide that can speed up a spell

Dark Rook, a house, a building, an organization, an institution

Dark Pawn, any female character

Light King, a male protagonist

Light Queen, a female protagonist

Light Bishop, a male mage

Light Knight, a vehicle or catalyst, a stranger, an outsider, the mage’s elemental guide that can speed up a spell

Light Rook, a house, a building, an organization, an institution

Light Pawn, any male character

While these are the complete chess pieces that are used as Witnesses or as Players, it is possible to add miniature figurines to your magical cast of characters, and even pieces from other chess sets.

Remember: After charging your magical chessboard, not only the board is imbued with a spirit; each piece is imbued with a spirit as well.

To reset your magical chessboard, all you have to do is recharge it.

Charging Your Magical Chess Set

To charge your magical chessboard, assign names to each of the cardinal directions by placing symbolic items in their corresponding corners on the board and vibrating the respective names. Use the names Integra (earth, pronounced “In-TEG-rah” ) for north, Renevator (air, pronounced “Reh-neh-vah-TOHR”) for east, Igne (fire, pronounced “IG-neh” or “IN-yeh”) for south, and Natura (water, pronounced “Nah-TOO-rah”) for west.

You may use the following symbolic items to place in the four corners: a pebble (earth) for north, a feather (air) for east, a lighter (fire) for south, and a pearl (water) for west.

Working A Spell on A Magical Chessboard

To demonstrate how the magical chessboard can be used, try a simple spell called Manifesting A Wish. Aside from the magical chess set (board and pieces) you will need:

Note that the colors and numbers of Additional Properties need to have significance for the success of a spell. Green, and all its verdant hues, is symbolic of growth, Nature, lushness, the unfurling of evolution under the sun, and prosperity; white signifies new beginnings, purity of intention, and cleanliness.

To commence the spell, write a wish, using the ballpoint pen with green ink, on the sheet of white paper. Fold the paper three times, three being a number of speed, affirmation, and certainty.

Place the folded paper on the center (+) of the magical chessboard. Since none of the magical chess pieces will be used in this spell, i.e. there are no Players, the pieces will remain in their designated positions as Witnesses. This arrangement, like other arrangements you will work on your magical chessboard, is called a Set-up.

A Spell In Progress

Let the Set-up stand for three days.

On the fourth day, take the folded paper and place it in a corner of your armoire, closet, or drawer—a gesture metaphoric of transferring an idea from the conscious level to the subconscious or unconscious level, where it will remain in the psyche and where it can be amplified.

Or try this other simple spell called Attracting A New Friend.

Select two Pawns to represent you and a person whom you want to attract to yourself and become your friend.

First, you need to make a Tag for each Pawn to give them their respective identities.

Take an ID-size photo of yourself or write your name on a tiny strip of paper and bind it round the First Player with white thread. You have just given the First vPlayer a Tag.

Take an ID-size photo of the person whom you want to attract to yourself and become your friend or write his/her name on a tiny strip of paper and bind it round the Second Player with white thread. You have just given the Second Player a Tag.

Bind the two Players together with blue (a color of friendship and loyalty) thread.

Place the bound Players on Light squares in the middle of the magical chessboard.

Notes:

A) For all magical spells, use, whenever feasible, Light squares for attracting someone or something and Dark Squares for repelling someone or something.

Let the Set-up stand for three days, or for as long as you think the spell is needed.

Afterwards, return the Players to their usual positions on the magical chessboard. Place the Tags inside a paper bag and dispose of them in a trash bin—an eco-friendly way of doing away with spell leavings.

B) If your Players are figural, ensure that they are facing each other in spells of attraction, and away from each other in spells of repulsion.

Dedicate Your Chessboard to Magic

To allow your magical chessboard to retain its potency, do not use it for any purpose other than for working spells. It is best to use a chess set that is portable or easy to hide away from prying eyes.

Knitted chessboards are most portable. You can make them yourself, endowing them with your own energy. They can easily be rolled up or folded. In addition, they are washable.

Day 1:

Select a Pawn (First Player) and a King or Queen (Second Player) to represent yourself.

Take an ID-size photo of yourself or write your name on a tiny strip of paper (Tag) and bind it round the First Player with silver thread.

Take a clear drinking glass or tumbler to serve as a crystal pillar, and invert it on the center (+) of the magical chessboard.

Place the First Player on top of the crystal pillar; place the Second Player at the foot of the crystal pillar, facing east.

Shower the Players with a few pinches of star-shaped sequins.

Let the Set-up stand for six days.

Day 7:

Transfer the Tag from the First Player to the Second Player.

Place the Second Player on top of the crystal pillar; place the First Player at the foot of the crystal pillar, facing west.

Shower the Players with a few more pinches of star-shaped sequins.

Let the Set-up stand for six more days.

Day 13:

Return the Players to their former positions on the magical chessboard, keeping the Tag on the Second Player.

Collect the star-shaped sequins from the magical chessboard, strew them on your bed, and keep them there for at least one night or until you need to change your bed linen. Place the Tag and the sequins inside a paper bag and dispose of them in a trash bin.

2. Where I Lead, They Will Follow

Additional Properties:

Gold thread

Clear drinking glass or tumbler

Star-shaped sequins

Select a King or Queen (Player) to represent yourself.

Take an ID-size photo of yourself or write your name on a tiny strip of paper (Tag) and bind it round the Player with gold thread.

Take a clear drinking glass or tumbler to serve as a crystal pillar and invert it on the center (+) of the magical chessboard.

Place the Player on top of the crystal pillar; place all 16 Pawns in the magical chess set round the foot of the crystal pillar.

Let the Set-up stand for six days.

On the seventh day, shower the Player with a pinch of star-shaped sequins.

Let the Set-up stand for six more days.

On the 13th day, return the 16 Pawns and then the Player to their former positions on the magical chessboard, keeping the Tag on the Player.

Collect the star-shaped sequins from the magical chessboard, strew them on your bed, and keep them there for at least one night or until you need to change your bed linen. Place the Tag and the sequins inside a paper bag and dispose of them in a trash bin.

3. Emotion in Motion

Additional Properties:

Yellow coaster

Clear drinking glass or tumbler

Use this spell to impart a message laden with an emotion to a person.

Take a yellow coaster and place it on the center (+) of the magical chessboard.

Take an ID-size photo (Tag) of the person you wish to send the message to. Place the Tag on the yellow coaster, facing west.

Take a clear drinking glass or tumbler filled with water.

Holding the drinking glass or tumbler in your right hand, greet the Tag as though it were the actual person you wish to impart your message to. Articulate your message to that person, engaging your mind and your feelings. Afterwards, place the drinking glass or tumbler directly on top of the Tag.

Let the Set-up stand for seven days.

On the eighth day, dispose of the water in the kitchen sink, wash the drinking glass or tumbler, and return it and the yellow coaster to their usual places. Place the Tag inside a paper bag and dispose of in a trash bin.

4. Flowers Are Forever

Additional Properties:

Pink coaster

Vase with water

Five fresh flowers

Use this spell to encourage a person to take romantic interest in you.

Take a pink coaster and place it on the center (+) of the magical chessboard.

Take an ID-size photo (Tag) of the person you wish to take romantic interest in you. Place the Tag on the pink coaster, facing south.

Take a vase of five fresh flowers in water.

Holding the vase in your right hand, greet the Tag as though it were the actual person you wish to take romantic interest in you. Articulate your message to that person, ensuring that your mind and your feelings are proactively engaged. Afterwards, place the vase directly on top of the Tag.

Let the Set-up stand until the flowers begin to fade.

Before the flowers completely fade, take the vase, dispose of the water in the kitchen sink, wash the vase, and return it and the pink coaster to their usual places. Place the Tag inside a paper bag and disposed of it in a trash bin.

5. Prosperity Bowl

Additional Properties:

Green thread

Small, brass bowl

Coins

Select a Pawn to represent yourself.

Take an ID-size photo of yourself or write your name on a tiny strip of paper (Tag) and bind it round the Pawn with green thread.

Take a small, brass bowl and place it on the center (+) of the magical chessboard.

Place the Pawn in the center of the brass bowl.

Fill the brass bowl with coins, ensuring that the First Player remains standing upright.

Take the four Knights and place them round the brass bowl in the corners they belong to (Light in East and South, Dark in North and West), all of them facing inward to the bowl.

Let the Set-up stand for as long as you wish.

Afterwards, leave the Tag among the coins inside the brass bowl, and keep the bowl and its contents in a deep corner of your armoire, closet, or drawer. Return the magical chess pieces to their usual positions on the magical chessboard.

6. More Than Just A Spoonful of Sugar

Additional Properties:

Blue thread

Small, clear glass bowl

Teaspoon

Brown sugar

Use this spell to get on the sweet side of a person, obtain a person’s favor, win a person’s sympathy or concurrence, or maintain good relations with a person.

Select a Pawn to represent yourself, and another to represent the other person.

Take an ID-size photo of yourself or write your name on a tiny strip of paper (First Tag) and bind it round your Pawn with blue thread.

Take an ID-size photo of the other person or write his/her name on a tiny strip of paper (Second Tag) and bind it round his/her Pawn with blue thread.

Take a small, clear glass bowl and place it on the center (+) of the magical chessboard.

Bind the two Pawns together with more blue thread and place the bound Pawns in the center of the clear glass bowl. If the Pawns are figural, they must be bound facing each other.

With a teaspoon, pour five teaspoons of brown sugar on the bound Pawns.

Let the Set-up stand for five days and five nights or for as long as you wish.

Afterwards, place the Tags and the expended sugar inside a paper bag and dispose of them in a trash bin.

Wash the Pawns and return them to their usual positions on the magical chessboard.

Wash the clear glass bowl and teaspoon and return them to their usual places.

7. All In the Family

Additional Properties:

White plate

White handkerchief

Use this spell to keep your family united, well-bonded, or together.

Select a King and Queen to represent the parents and a Pawn to represent each child or some person in the family.

Take an ID-size photo of each family member or write their names on tiny strips of paper (Tags) and bind them round the Players.

Take a white plate and place it on the center (+) of the magical chessboard.

Bind all of the Players together with white thread, ensuring that all of them remain firmly standing.

Cover the bound Players with a white handkerchief.

Let the Set-up stand for as long as you wish, or until any threat of disunion, disharmony, or separation is past.

Afterwards, place the Tags inside a paper bag and dispose of them in a trash bin.

Return the chess pieces to their usual positions on the magical chessboard.

Wash the white plate and return it to its usual place.

8. Alternative, Alternative Healing

Additional Properties:

Violet thread

Green saucer

Teaspoon

Mung beans

Use this spell to heal a sick person.

Day 1:

Select a Pawn to represent the patient.

Take an ID-size photo of the patient or write his/her name on a tiny strip of paper (Tag) and bind it round your Pawn with violet thread.

Place the green saucer in the center (+) of the magical chessboard.

Place the Pawn on the green saucer, in a reclining position with its head to the north.

Place the Light Bishop on the green saucer, in a standing position at the foot of the Pawn.

Pour seven teaspoons of mung beans on the Pawn.

Let the Set-up stand for three days.

Day 4:

Raise the Pawn so that it is in a standing position, facing the White Bishop.

Let the Set-up stand for one more day.

Day 5:

Place the Bishop outside the green saucer.

Let the Set-up stand for one more day.

Day 6:

Place the Pawn outside the green saucer. Place the mung beans inside a paper bag and set aside. Make a new Tag for the Pawn; place the old Tag among the expended mung beans inside the paper bag.

Let the Set-up stand for one more day.

Day 7:

Take away the green saucer. Wash it and return it to its usual position.

Let the Set-up stand for one more day.

Day 8:

Return the Pawn to its usual position on the magical chessboard.

Let the Set-up stand for one more day.

Day 9:

Dispose of the paper bag in a trash bin outside your house.

Return the Pawn to its usual position on the magical chessboard.

Place the Tag inside a separate paper bag and dispose of it in a trash bin.

9. Creating A Protective Shield

Additional Properties:

White saucer

Clear glass bowl

Use this spell to create a protective shield over someone or something.

If you wish to protect a person or more than one person, select the appropriate chess piece to represent that person or chess pieces to represent those persons.

If you wish to protect a house, a building, an organization, or an institution, select a Light Rook to represent it.

If you wish to protect anything else that is tangible or intangible, use a symbolic figurine, photo, or drawing of that.

Take an ID-size photo of whom or what you wish to protect or their names on tiny strips of paper (Tags) and bind them round the Player, Players, Property, or Properties.

Take the white saucer and place it on the center (+) of the magical chessboard. Place the Player, Players, Property, or Properties on the saucer.

Cover the saucer by inverting the clear-glass bowl on top of it.

Locate the four Bishops round the clear glass bowl, in the directions they belong to (Dark Bishops north and west; Light Bishops east and south).

Let the Set-up stand for at least ten days, as long as you wish, or until any threat of danger or harm is past.

Afterwards, place the Tags inside a paper bag and dispose of them in a trash bin outside your house.

Return the chess pieces to their usual positions on the magical chessboard.

Wash the white saucer and the clear glass bowl and return them to their usual places.

10. Dream Incubation 1

Additional Properties:

Violet thread

Paper

Violet-ink pen

Dream journal or notebook

Select a Pawn to represent yourself.

Take an ID-size photo of yourself or write your name on a tiny strip of paper (Tag) and bind it round the Player.

On a clean sheet of paper and using a violet-ink pen, write a problem or issue that you wish to obtain a resolution to. Fold the sheet of paper into a paper boat.

Place the paper boat in the center (+) of the magical chessboard, with its points facing west and east.

Place the Player inside the boat in a standing position. If the boat and the Player are figural, the boat and the Player must be facing west.

Let the Set-up stand overnight.

If you do not keep a dream journal, have a notebook at your bedside so that you can encode your dreams upon waking.

Afterwards, unfold the paper boat and keep it in your dream journal or notebook.

Place the Tag inside a paper bag and dispose of it in a trash bin.

Return the Pawn to its usual position on the magical chessboard.

11. Dream Incubation 2

Additional Properties:

Paper

Violet-ink pen

Violet face towel

Dream journal or notebook

Select a Pawn to represent yourself.

Take an ID-size photo of yourself or write your name on a tiny strip of paper (Tag) and bind it round the Player.

On a clean sheet of paper and using a violet-ink pen, write a problem or issue that you wish to obtain a resolution to. Fold the sheet of paper and place it on the center (+) of the magical chessboard.

Fold the violet face towel to simulate the shape of a bed and place it on top of the folded sheet of paper, with its points facing west and east.

Place the Player on the folded face towel in a reclining position. If the bed and the Player are figural, the headboard of the bed and the head of the Player must be facing west.

Locate the four Knights round the folded face towel, in the directions they belong to (Dark Knights north and west; Light Knights east and south). The Knights must be facing inward to the Player.

Let the Set-up stand overnight.

If you do not keep a dream journal, have a notebook at your bedside so that you can encode your dreams upon waking.

Afterwards, unfold the paper boat and keep it in your dream journal or notebook.

Place the Tag inside a paper bag and dispose of it in a trash bin.

Return the Pawn and the Knights to their usual positions on the magical chessboard.

After washing and drying, return the violet face towel to its usual place.

12. New Beginnings

Additional Properties:

Black thread

Black or White saucer

Teaspoon

Apple seeds

Select a Pawn to represent yourself or anyone for whom you wish the manifestation of a new beginning.

Take an ID-size photo of yourself or the person and write your/his/her name on a tiny strip of paper (Tag) and bind it round the Pawn with black thread.

Place the black or white saucer on the center (+) of the magical chessboard.

Strew three teaspoonfuls of apple seeds on the saucer.

Place the Pawn on the saucer, in a standing position.

Locate the four Knights round the saucer, in the directions they belong to (Black Knights north and west; White Knights east and south). The Knights must be facing outward, to the four directions.

Let the Set-up stand for three days and three nights.

On the eighth day, return the Pawn and the Knights to their usual positions on the magical chessboard.

Plant the Tag and the seeds in the earth anywhere near your or the person’s house.

13. Chilling

Additional Properties:

Blue thread

White plate

Blue face towel

Clear glass bowl

Blue saucer

Teaspoon or tongs

Ice chips or ice cubes

Use this spell to break someone’s fever, cool off someone’s anger, or stop someone from taking rash action.

Select a Pawn to represent the person.

Take an ID-size photo of the person or write his/her name on a tiny strip of paper (Tag) and bind it round the Pawn with blue thread.

Place the white plate in the center (+) of the magical chessboard; this protects the surface of your magical chessboard from moisture. Lay the blue face towel on top of the plate, with its corners facing the cardinal directions. Place the clear glass bowl on the face towel.

Using a teaspoon for ice chips or tongs for ice cubes, fill ¾ of the clear glass bowl with ice chips or ice cubes.

Place the blue saucer on top of the ice chips or ice cubes.

Let the Set-up stand until all of the ice completely melts to water.

Important Note:

The water may be poured down the kitchen sink and the ice replenished as deemed necessary. However, you may replenish only two times.

Afterwards, return the Pawn to its usual position on the magical chessboard.

The plate, face towel, bowl, saucer, and teaspoon or tongs may be washed and returned to their usual places.

14. Warding Off A Natural Disaster

Additional Properties:

White coaster

White saucer

White candle

Lighter or matches

Since magic is a form of prayer using properties, or props, one’s prayer is sent through the cosmos but, like all prayer, is not necessarily “answered” in the way one expects. Use this spell to ward off an impending natural disaster, such as a hurricane, typhoon, tornado, bush fire, volcanic ash flow, tidal wave, flood, and the like.

Take a small printout of a map of the city or country you are in and place it on the center (+) of the magical chessboard; the map must be oriented correctly to the north.

Place the white coaster on the center of the map. Place the white saucer on top of the coaster, and set up the white candle on the saucer.

Locate the four Rooks round the saucer, in the directions they belong to (Dark Rooks north and west; Light Rooks east and south).

Locate each Bishop in front of each Rook, in the directions they belong to (Dark Bishops north and west; Light Bishops east and south).

Locate each Knight in front of each Bishop, in the directions they belong to (Dark Knights north and west; Light Knights east and south); the Knights should be facing outward, towards the cardinal directions.

Light the candle. Let the set-up stand until the candle is consumed, keeping in mind that a lit candle should never be left unattended.

Notes:

A) You may light as many candles as you wish.

B) The wax residue of each candle will form a figural message; if there is no wax residue, i.e., if all of the wax has been consumed by the heat of the flame, that is a positive sign.

Afterwards, return the Players to their usual positions on the magical chessboard.

Wash the saucer and return it to its usual place.

Place all candle residue inside a paper bag and dispose of it in a trash bin outside your house.

15. Unlocking Sealed Mysteries 1

Additional Properties:

Padlock

Key

Use this spell to gain access to information, knowledge, a secret, someone’s confidence, and such.

Place a locked padlock on the center (+) of the magical chessboard.

Locate the four Bishops round the padlock, in the directions they belong to (Dark Bishops north and west; Light Bishops east and south).

Let the Set-up stand for three days and three nights.

On the fourth day, unlock the padlock with the key. Keeping the key in the lock, return the padlock to the center (+) of the magical chessboard.

Let the Set-up stand for as long as necessary.

Afterwards, return the Players to their usual positions on the magical chessboard.

Stow away the open padlock and key inside your armoire, closet, or drawer.

16. Unlocking Sealed Mysteries 2

Additional Properties:

Small box with lock

Key

This is a variation of the previous spell.

Place a small, locked box on the center (+) of the magical chessboard.

Locate the four Bishops round the box, in the directions they belong to (Dark Bishops north and west; Light Bishops east and south).

Let the Set-up stand for three days and three nights.

On the fourth day, unlock the box with the key. Keeping the key in the lock and lid of the box open, return the box to the center (+) of the magical chessboard.

Let the Set-up stand for as long as you deem necessary.

Afterwards, return the Players to their usual positions on the magical chessboard.

Stow away the open box and key inside your armoire, closet, or drawer.

17. Transmitting Your Affection

Additional Properties:

Pink saucer

Photograph, Memento, Souvenir, or Symbolic Object

Four pink coasters

Four small, pink saucers

Pink birthday cake candles

Lighter or matches

Use this spell to transmit your affection to anyone or to more than one—whether near, far, corporeally living, or deceased.

Place the pink saucer in the middle of the magical chessboard.

Take a photograph, memento, souvenir, or object symbolic of the person/s and place it on the saucer.

Locate the four pink coasters round the saucer, each one in a cardinal direction.

Place one small, pink saucer on each coaster.

Set up one pink birthday cake candle in each saucer.

Light the candle in the following order: north, south, east, west. Let the set-up stand until the candles are consumed, keeping in mind that lit candles should never be left unattended.

Notes:

A) You may light as many sets of four candles as you wish.

B) The wax residue of each candle will form figural messages; if there is no wax residue, i.e., if all of the wax has been consumed by the heat of the flames, that is a positive sign.

Afterwards, wash the four small, pink saucers and return them to their usual places.

Place all candle residue inside a paper bag and dispose of it in a trash bin.

18. Setting Up Safe Passage

Additional Properties:

White thread

Red saucer or plate

Miniature vehicle

Use this spell to ask the cosmos safe passage for one or more travelers.

Select a Pawn to represent the passenger, or one Pawn per passenger.

Take an ID-size photo of the passenger or write his/her name on a tiny strip of paper (Tag) and bind it round the Pawn with white thread. If there is more than one passenger, create appropriate Tags for the other passenger/s.

Place the red saucer in the middle of the magical chessboard.

Place the miniature vehicle (plane, chopper, ship, train, boat, ferry, truck, bus, van, car) on the red saucer. The vehicle must be facing the direction of actual travel. If these cannot be accommodated in a saucer, use a red plate instead.

Locate the four Knights round the saucer or plate, in the directions they belong to (Dark Knights north and west; Light Knights east and south).

Let the Set-up stand for as long as travel is ongoing. For the traveler’s/travelers’ return, reset with the miniature vehicle facing the direction of actual travel.

Afterwards, return the Players to their usual positions on the magical chessboard. Wash the red saucer/plate and return it to its usual place. Stow away the miniature vehicle in its usual place.

Place the Tags inside a paper bag and dispose of them in a trash bin.

19. Charging A Talisman

Additional Property:

Talisman

Use this spell to charge a talisman. You may charge only one talisman at a time, and each charging must be performed on the first night of a full moon.

Simply place your talisman on the center (+) of the magical chessboard.

Let the Set-up stand for three nights.

20. Charging and Recharging A Magical Chessboard

Additional Property:

Pocket Mirror

Use this spell to charge or recharge your magical chessboard. The first charging must be performed on the first night of a full moon. Afterwards, recharging may be performed on a Friday night.

Place the pocket mirror on the center (+) of the magical chessboard. The mirror acts as a conduit for cosmic energy.

Let the Set-up stand for three nights.

If the chessboard has drawers, stow away the pocket mirror in one of them.

Note:

A magical chessboard may be charged once every seven months.

21. No More Fear

Additional Properties:

White thread

Miniature monster figurine or object symbolic of a fear

Red coaster

Small, black saucer

Black candle

Lighter or matches

Small, white saucer

White candle

Use this spell to banish a nagging fear or phobia.

A) First Stage:

Select a Pawn to represent yourself or another person.

Take an ID-size photo of yourself or the person or write your/his/her name on a tiny strip of paper (Tag) and bind it round the Pawn with white thread.

Place the Pawn on the center (+) of the magical chessboard.

Locate the four Rooks round the Pawn, in the directions they belong to (Dark Rooks north and west; Light Rooks east and south).

Select a miniature monster figurine or object symbolic of a fear. Place it anywhere within the west quadrant of the magical chessboard. Locate the four Knights round it, in the directions they belong to (Dark Knights north and west; Light White Knights east and south).

Place the red coaster between the two tableaux. Place the small, black saucer on top of the coaster. Set up the black candle on the saucer and light the candle, keeping in mind that a lit candle must never be left unattended.

Afterwards, wash the small, black saucer and return it to its usual place.

Place all candle residue inside a paper bag.

B) Second Stage:

Note:

The longest time period between the First Stage and the Second Stage should be three days and three nights.

Take the miniature monster figurine or object symbolic of a fear off the chessboard and place it inside the paper bag that contains the candle residue. Dispose of the paper bag in a trash bin outside your house.

Place the small, white saucer on the red coaster.

Set up the white candle on the saucer and light the candle, keeping in mind that a lit candle must never be left unattended.

Afterwards, wash the small, white saucer and return it to its usual place.

Place all candle residue inside a second paper bag.

Return all the Players to their usual positions on the magical chessboard.

Place the Tag inside the second paper bag, and dispose of it in the kitchen trash bin.

Note:

You may keep the Pawn that you used on you for seven days and seven nights, before returning it to its usual position on the magical chessboard.

22. Defenders

Additional Properties:

Black thread

Toy soldiers, warrior figurines, or superhero or action figures

Use this spell whenever you feel that you need spirit guides from the astral realm to protect you.

Select a Pawn to represent yourself.

Take an ID-size photo of yourself or write your name on a tiny strip of paper (Tag) and bind it round the Pawn with black thread.

Place the Player on the center (+) of the magical chessboard.

Surround the Player with toy soldiers, warrior figurines, or superhero or action figures, ensuring that all of these are facing outward.

Let the Set-up stand for as long as necessary.

Afterwards, place the Tag inside a paper bag and dispose of it in a trash bin.

23. Away From It All

Additional Properties:

Blue thread

Two or three gift cards

Use this spell to recluse yourself whenever you need solitude. This spell is the opposite of Spell 25: Lifting Walls.

Select a Pawn to represent yourself.

Take an ID-size photo of yourself or write your name on a tiny strip of paper (Tag) and bind it round the Pawn with blue thread.

Place the Player on the center (+) of the magical chessboard.

Surround the Player with “four walls” by propping up two gift cards at right angles to each other around it. You may cover the top of this structure with a third gift card.

Let the Set-up stand for as long as necessary.

Afterwards, place the Tag inside a paper bag and dispose of it in a trash bin.

24. Coming Into Wealth

Additional Properties:

Orange thread

Coins, paper money, and/or jewelry

Four small, orange or gold jewelry pouches

Gold silk cord

Use this spell to come into wealth—keeping in mind that all magic must follow natural law.

Select a King or Queen to represent yourself.

Take an ID-size photo of yourself or write your name on a tiny strip of paper (Tag) and bind it round the Player with orange thread.

Place the Player on the saucer.

Fill four small, orange or gold jewelry pouches with coins, paper money, and/or jewelry and locate them at the four corners of the magical chessboard (north, east, south, and west).

Locate a Bishop beside each pouch.

On each succeeding day, move the Player one square at a time to travel north, east, south, and west to pick up the four pouches and then bring them, also one square at a time, to the center (+) of the magical chessboard.

On the day that the Player and the pouches arrive at the center (+) of the magical chessboard, bind all Properties round the Player with a gold silk cord.

Let the set-up stand for at least three days, or for as long as necessary.

Afterwards, place the Tag inside a paper bag and dispose of it in a trash bin.

Important Notes:

A) Perform this spell in a place that is secure, since the Properties include money and jewelry. It is possible, however, to use token money and jewelry.

B) Again, since all magic must follow natural law, you will need to work hard to come into wealth—all the magic will provide is the opportunity for you to do so.

25. Lifting Walls

Additional Properties:

Blue thread

Two gift cards

Use this spell to make an isolated or inaccessible person available to everyone else.

Select a Pawn to represent the person in question.

Take an ID-size photo of the person or write his/her name on a tiny strip of paper (Tag) and bind it round the Pawn with blue thread.

Place the Player on the center (+) of the magical chessboard.

Surround the Player with “four walls” by propping up two gift cards at right angles to each other around it.

After three days, locate the four Knights round the “walls”, in the directions they belong to (Dark Knights north and west; Light Knights east and south), ensuring that the Knights are facing away from the “walls.”

After three more days, surround the Knights and the “walls” with all other pieces, in circular formation. The use of all pieces as Players is called an Omnibus.

Ensuring that you are alone and that no one can hear you, sing a light, enticing ballad over the Set-up.

Remove the gift cards, take them outdoors, and burn them in a safe container.

Dispose of the ashes in the west.

Let the Set-up stand for three more days, or for as long as necessary.

Place the Tag inside a paper bag and dispose of it in a trash bin.

26. Wishing Pincushion

Additional Properties:

Pincushion

Pins

Procure a pincushion that you can dedicate to your magical work, keeping in mind that the figure, shape, materials, and colors of the pincushion should have symbolic meanings for you.

Place the pincushion in the center (+) of the magical chessboard.

Locate the four Bishops round the pincushion, in the directions they belong to (Dark Bishops north and west; Light Bishops east and south).

Locate the four Knights outside the four Bishops, in the directions they belong to (Dark Knights north and west; Light Knights east and south). All four Knights should face inward.

Make a wish and stick a pin in the pincushion for it. You may make as many wishes and stick as many pins in the pincushion as you want at any one time.

Let the Set-up stand for as long as necessary.

Simply reassemble the Set-up the next time you need to use the wishing pincushion again.

27. Escape and Evasion

Additional Properties:

Black thread

Second chess set

Makeshift bridge (flat ruler, clean popsicle stick, or pair of chopsticks)

Use this spell as a more complex version of Spell 30: Invisibility Spell, mainly to extricate yourself or another person from trouble, a difficulty, a mess, a tricky situation, or a bind.

Select a Pawn to represent yourself or another person.

Take an ID-size photo of yourself or write your name on a tiny strip of paper (Tag) and bind it round the Player with black thread.

Place the Player on the center (+) of the magical chessboard.

Surround the Player with the remaining Pawns in the chess set, in circular formation.

After 30 minutes, set a second chess set beside the first chess set.

Create a bridge between the two chessboards using any appropriate material on hand: for example, a flat ruler, a clean popsicle stick, or a pair of chopsticks.

With flicks of your right forefinger, make the Pawns in circular formation topple on the chessboard.

Take the Player and set it on the bridge.

After 30 minutes, transfer the Player to the center (+) of the second chessboard.

Take away the bridge immediately.

Locate the four Bishops from the second chess set round the Player representing you, in the directions they belong to (Dark Bishops north and west; Light Bishops east and south).

Let the Set-up stand for as long as necessary.

28. Separations and (Re)Unions

Additional Properties:

White thread

Pink thread

Scissors

Yellow rubber band

Clear drinking glass or tumbler

Use this spell to separate two people who are in an illicit relationship, and to astrally direct either the man or the woman to unite or reune with his/her legitimate wife/husband.

Separation:

Select a King and a Queen to represent the persons in question. It is possible to select two dark Players, two light Players, or one dark Player and one light Player.

Take ID-size photos of the person or write their names on tiny strips of paper (Tags) and bind them round the respective Players with pink thread.

Bind the two Players together with pink thread, ensuring that the thread goes round them seven times.

Place the bound Players on the center (+) of the magical chessboard.

Day 1:

Cut the pink binding thread with scissors.

Day 2:

Separate the two Players by making the Player of the person you are concerned with advance one square to the east, and the Player of the person you wish to leave him/her advance one square to the west.

Days 4 - 7:

One each succeeding day, keep separating the two Players one square each at a time, until both Players are on the farthest edges (east and west) of the magical chessboard.

Day 8:

Shield each of the two Players by placing Rooks, Bishops, and Knights around them. The Knights should be facing toward the Players they are shielding.

Let the Set-up stand for ten days, or for as long as necessary.

Re(union):

Now select a King or Queen to represent the legitimate husband or wife. It is possible to select a dark King/Queen or a light King/Queen.

Take a ID-size photo of the legitimate husband or wife person or write his/her name on a tiny strips of paper (Tag) and bind it round the King/Queen with white thread.

Place the King/Queen on the center (+) of the magical chessboard.

Day 1:

Free up the shielded Player in the east by returning the Rooks, Bishops, and Knights to their usual positions on the magical chessboard.

Days 2 - 5:

On each succeeding day, keep advancing the Player in the east one square at a time, until it is beside the King/Queen representing the legitimate husband/wife.

Day 6:

Bind these two Players in the center (+) of the magical chessboard with white thread, ensuring that the thread goes round them ten times.

Day 7:

Bind these two Players with a yellow rubber band.

Day 8:

Cover these two Players with an inverted, clear drinking glass or tumbler.

Let the Set-up stand for ten days, or for as long as necessary.

Afterwards, place the Tags of the last two Players in the center (+) of the magical chessboard inside a paper bag and dispose of it in a trash bin.

Place the Tag of the Player in the west inside a paper bag and dispose of it in a trash bin at the crossroads.

29. Binding Someone

Additional Properties:

Black, electric tape

Scissors

Use this spell to delay or stop someone or to prevent someone from saying or doing something detrimental to your welfare.

Select a dark Pawn to represent the person in question.

Take an ID-size photo of the person or write his/her name on a tiny strip of paper (Tag) and bind it round the Player with seven rounds of black, electric tape.

Place the Player on the center (+) of the magical chessboard.

Locate the four Bishops round the saucer, in the directions they belong to (Dark Bishops north and west; Light Bishops east and south).

Let the Set-up stand for at least three days and three nights, and longer if necessary.

Afterwards, place the Tag inside a paper bag and dispose of it in a trash bin at a crossroads.

30. Invisibility Spell

Additional Properties:

Black thread

Pawn from a second chess set

Small box

Use this spell when you wish to go unnoticed, keep a low profile, be uninvolved in a certain issue, or remain safely in the background.

Select a Pawn to represent yourself or another person.

Take an ID-size photo of yourself or write your name on a tiny strip of paper (Tag) and bind it round the Player with black thread.

Place the Player on the center (+) of the magical chessboard.

Surround the Player with the remaining Pawns in the chess set, in circular formation.

After 30 minutes, replace the Player representing you with a Pawn from a second chess set. This odd Pawn then becomes a red herring in the middle of the circle.

Hide the Pawn representing you in one of the chess board drawers, if the chess board has drawers. If the chess board does not have drawers, place the Pawn inside a small box instead. Place the box elsewhere in the room, or on a surface other than the surface the chessboard is on.

Let the Set-up stand for as long as necessary.

31. Ringing for Commitment

Additional Properties:

Red thread

Clear glass or white saucer

Ring or finger band

Bell

Use this spell to elicit commitment from someone. Meditate on the desired outcome while performing the entirety of this spell.

Select a Pawn to represent the person in question.

Take an ID-size photo of the person or write his/her name on a tiny strip of paper (Tag) and bind it round the Player with white thread.

Place the clear glass or white saucer on the center (+) of the magical chessboard.

Place the Player on the saucer.

Locate the four Bishops round the saucer, in the directions they belong to (Dark Bishops north and west; Light Bishops east and south).

Vibrate your desired outcome into the ring or finger band. Place the ring on the Player, where it can sit on its head like a crown or round its neck like a torque.

Locate the four Knights round the four Bishops, in the directions they belong to (Dark Knights north and west; Light Knights east and south).

Take the bell and ring it round the set-up four times, moving it in a clockwise direction.

Let the set-up stand for three days and three nights.

On the fourth day, return the Players to their usual positions on the magical chessboard. Wash the clear glass or white saucer and return it, and the ring or finger band and bell, to their usual places.

Place the Tag inside a paper bag and dispose of it in a trash bin.

32. Endings

Additional Properties:

Black or metal saucer

Nine fresh leaves from a ficus tree

Use this spell to provide closure to a relationship or an issue, rid your psyche of an unpleasant experience or memory, or allow your old Self to give way to a new Self.

Place the black or metal saucer on the center (+) of the magical chessboard.

Cut nine fresh leaves from a ficus tree and wash them in the kitchen sink. Place the leaves on the saucer.

Locate the four Knights round the saucer, in the directions they belong to (Dark Knights north and west; Light Knights east and south).

Let the Set-up stand until the leaves are completely withered.

Afterwards, take the dead leaves outside your house and bury them in the earth.

Wash the black or metal saucer in the kitchen sink and return it to its usual place.

33. Journey From The Center of The Self

Use the chessboard as a labyrinth of healing, centering, enlightenment, spiritual evolution, or cleansing as you feel necessary. It is an excellent reset that is equivalent to retroactive enchantment.

Select a Pawn to represent yourself.

Note:

After frequently using your magical chessboard you will find it no longer necessary to make Tags; simply vibrate the appropriate name/s into the chosen Player/s before locating it/them on the board.

Place the Player in the center (+) of the magical chessboard. From this inner location, move the Player outward and in a clockwise direction square by square, one square a day, until the Player reaches the end of the journey, which is the last, outer square. Always keep in mind that only the Light squares are to be used for positive manifestation, and the Dark, for cleansing, dispelling, and expulsion.

At the end of the journey, return the Player to its usual position on the magical chessboard—or begin a journey anew.

34. Gratitude Dish

Additional Properties:

Your Gratitude Dish

Items to place within your gratitude dish

Never forget that the best prayers are not prayers of beseeching and imploration but prayers of gratitude and praise.

This converts the magical chessboard to a base, with Witnesses, for your gratitude dish.

Place your gratitude dish on the center (+) of the magical chessboard.

Locate the four Bishops round the saucer, in the directions they belong to (Dark Bishops north and west; Light Bishops east and south).

Let the Set-up stand for three nights.

On the fourth night onward, you may start placing gratitude items, souvenirs, or offerings on the dish: pebbles, crystals, seashells, candy that can eventually be given away to the poor, and such. The Players may be returned to their usual positions and the dish stowed away from time to time, should you wish to use the magical chessboard for other spells.

35. Scrying Board

Additional Properties:

Crystal Ball, Round Pocket Mirror, or Black Disc

This converts the magical chessboard to a charged showcase, with Witnesses, for scrying implements.

Place the crystal ball, round pocket mirror, or black disc on the center (+) of the magical chessboard.

Let the Set-up stand for three nights.

On the fourth night onward, you may scry on the crystal ball, round pocket mirror, or black disc. Whichever you use, you may stow it away afterwards; the next time you place it on the magical chessboard there will be no need to charge it for three consecutive nights.

Concluding Message

Only 35 formal spells are provided here to demonstrate the use of your magical chessboard—and to show you that there are other, endless, possibilities. With the right dosage of creativity and common sense you should be able to develop your own magical chessboard spells using mundane items such as paper clips, binder clips, other pieces of jewelry, key chains, medicine bottles, perfume and potion vials, buttons, and an entire range of household and office items that surround you every day.

Study very carefully the Additional Properties prescribed and the assignations to and locations and movements of the Players in the spells provided above—you will be able to infer how these may be used in other spells, including how to reverse them.

Indeed, in Magic for Squares on a magical chessboard, there are more Set-ups than there are game moves—as there are in real life.
